Uploading to the PC

Back Up Next

Sending a Note to a PC is a very common task because many students use the Notepad Catalog to store information they want to keep.  A Note is also very easy to save as it has no associated attachments.  In view of this I will illustrate the uploading process using a Note called "Phys. 2/a". The process is exactly the same for aplets, programs, matrices and lists.

The short version...

The process basically involves four steps:

  1. Connect the PC to the calculator using the cable.
  2. Start the HPGComm software on the PC.
  3. Decide where you want to store your material, if necessary creating an empty directory to hold it using the button provided.
  4. Press SEND on the calculator, choose "Disk drive..." from the list of options and then choose "Send Now". Just ignore the other option  of "Pick location...".

In more detail...

  1. One end of the cable should be plugged into your PC's serial port, the other into the top of the calculator.  Be very careful not to bend the pins in the socket.
    .
  2. Start the HPGComm program.  If necessary change serial ports to gain access to a valid port.
    .
  3. Press the button to display a directory tree for your computer.  When you click on a folder a message will appear which says either "This directory contains HP39 files" (or 38 or 40) or "This directory does not contain calculator files " depending on whether you have previously stored files in it.
    .
  4. Once the tree is displayed you should select the directory you want to use to store your Note. If you need to create a new directory then use the button to create a directory or use the normal Windows methods.  Press OK when you have chosen a directory.

When you have selected a directory on the PC you should find that the image in the window of the HPGComm program changes to reflect the contents of the directory.

If the directory contains HP39G or HP40G objects then you will see the image shown left.

If, on the other hand, the directory contains HP38G objects then the image displayed will be that of an HP38G calculator.

If you've not used the directory before then the image will be that of a puppy!

  1. Ensure that you are in the Note Catalog on the calculator.  On the 39G and 40G press SHIFT 0, on the 38G press BLUE 1. Move the highlight onto the Note that you want to transfer to the PC.
    .
  2. Press the SEND button on the calculator.  From the list of options choose Disk drive... and press ENTER or OK.  From the next option list choose Send Now.
    .
  3. If this is the first time that you have used this particular directory on the PC to hold calculator objects then you will now see the message shown right.  A corresponding message will appear on the PC.  You need only press ENTER or YES to continue. No action is needed on the PC.
    .
  4. While the Note is being transferred to the calculator an indicator will display on the PC.

.

The process of downloading matrices, lists and programs is essentially the same as that outlined above.  The only difference is in which view is active on the calculator. Aplets can be slightly more complex because they often have attached programs. This is not something you need to worry about - just make sure that you don't unplug until the whole process is finished.
